When she smiles on the highway
driving with me
to some small and nameless town,
I forget all my unhappiness and fear
and the midnight haunted thoughts
that arrive when my eyes are closed.
But have you ever been so disturbed
by a dream in the cold and wintry night
that you wept in a dark and lonely place
beside an extinguished candle
and moonless window?
I'm really too old to fall in love
and become shaken by a woman's presence
after she has left the room.
I must be paying for accumulated sins
or a kindness I forgot to show;
I'm certain I want this lady to be my end
regardless of whatever direction
this obsession goes.
