Today I Understand This Perfectly Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

I use to think it selfish for those of peace of mind,
To have little time to give to others.
But 'today'...
I understand this perfectly.

For one to sacrificially give of themselves to others,
Only to be left disrespected?
As another's druthers...
NO!
This is not right.

No one should give of themselves that way,
For the sake of humiliation.
That is a price, ultimately, forgotten one has paid.
And only God knows,
Whether or not such a deed has been worth it!
