Traveller Poem by Ima Ryma

Traveller

No one spent more time than did I
During the war with General Lee.
Traveller, he called me. and rode my
Iron gray back to history,
With him through battles won and lost,
Surrender at Appomatax.
Gray man and horse had lived the cast
Of Civil War bound by sad facts.
I went with him to gentler ways
To a college, and war did cease
For us for rest of our days.
The General and I rest in peace.

The General and I travelled far,
Knowing what war and peace both are.
