Truth/Opinion Poem by David Knox

Truth/Opinion

He who stands alone to codify a belief
Will inherit much grief.
Without the vindication
Of shared affirmation
How can he hope to be right.... or feel right?
Is it worth being right if it means you're alone?
This is my plight
The hardest part of declaring my truth is that... it is my own
And even though denial does not affect the status of truth
It feels so, as if the roof
Of my house... has just caved in
As if I'm the one committing a sin
When really I'm right, I must be right
This is not something that 'might'
I must be right because this is everything!
I will not swing
Nor to the right nor to the left, but my truth feels less true
When I don't have the approval of him or her... or you
How can they just say it's my opinion?
It's the truth! My justification
But their denial, denies my vindication
As the sole defender of this truth which is immutable... I feel wrong
I'm losing my song, cause now they've convinced me
And I don't know what to think, I can no longer see
My truth clearly
Because now it's clouded in doubt and uncertainty
Without affecting its validity or trueness... they've made me question
Even the things I've ALWAYS held most true...
