Two Very Different Days (Both Spent In The Rain) Poem by Ted Sheridan

Two Very Different Days (Both Spent In The Rain)

Rating: 5.0

Day One:

The rain is drowning me
It has used up all the available air
Even snatched it right out of my lungs
It
Leaves me lying in this paddy
With rice growing out of my ass
For days on end it has been
That between the sounds
Of many the rounds being fired
There is the sound of spent cartridges
Hitting the ground and then
Those blasted rain drops land
Piercing my soul and my sanity
With their sting

The rain is drowning me
I can't see a thing
It blends the trees with the sky
Turns everything opaque
It floods my eyes
It steals the tears I cry
The ones for home should I survive
The killing fields of war
Leave me lying in this paddy
With rice
This damn rice still hiding my ass
From my enemies and from God
Washing me
Yet leaving me so unclean
With the stench of death
As those blasted rain drops landing
Piercing my soul and sanity
With their sting

Day Two

It has been raining hard for days
And during that time we've just played
Games of love and sex indoors as
It
Leaves us lying in this bed together
With our love for each other in our heads and
For days on end it has been
That between the sounds
Of our sexual satisfactions
There are the sounds of spent contraceptives
Hitting the floor and then
Those peaceful raindrops land
Begging that we continue our dance
To their beautiful song of romance

The rain is softly falling
And in it the beauty of you is made clear
It's moisture on your face
Turns my love into a river
That floods my heart with love
And washes away the sadness
That on a day long ago
When I felt like it
Almost drowned me
In a world that was so troubled
It was impossible to take a breath
A world with which I shared
Only pain with no gain
A world where thunder and lightning
Could not cover the sounds
Of my soul and sanity
As they screamed for help
As they prayed for a day like this
Spent in bed with you and your love
Showering me from head to toe

Delightfully contradicting! I especially enjoyed the last few lines tying the first stanza into the last. Fine work, Ted.
