Un Cadeau. (Translation) . Poem by Michael Walker

Un Cadeau. (Translation) .

Tu as l'intention sans doute
de ne me donner rien,
et tu ne sais pas
que le cadeau a deja ete
recu.
Maudis-moi alors,
et enleve
le charme.
Car je suis riche;
non pas une mendiante
bon marche et vetue de guenilles
mais une reine,
pour exciter le roi
dont j'ai besoin en toi.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Alice Walker was raised in near-poverty in the South. She profited from a good education, and became a writer of novels and poems, thus becoming rich, as she mentions in the poem. She is no beggar but a queen, hoping to arouse the king which he is to her and she needs.
No need for any gift from him. Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel 'The Color Purple', which was made into a successful movie. She achieved everything despite being unsighted in one eye.
