POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Poem Hunter/ Gwendolyn Brooks/ Poems/ 3/39.
The poem is about a girl growing up, where she wants to play, and what she dreams of becoming. She has stayed in the front yard all her life, and she wants a glimpse of the back yard, where weeds grow. She wants to go down the alley, where children from an orphanage play until late. These children have more fun.
Her mother is quite strict and warns that Johnnie Mae and George will turn out no good. But she does not agree. She would like to be a woman of the night one day, wearing black lace stockings and make-up as she struts down the the streets.
This is a very honest poem, not at all puritanical. The girl who disagrees with her mother may be Gwendolyn Brooks herself, but not necessarily. The front yard and back yard become symbols of respectability and life on the wild side.
To me, a candid poem well worth reading. It makes me want to have a good time today.
