Universal Communication Poem by RoseAnn V. Shawiak

Universal Communication

Mysterious and magical, diversity shows us the cultures of
other countries.

Fascinating and wonderful, learning about them always brings
enlightenment and illuminates things we don't know about.

It is so strange how we all live on this earth and yet know
so little about one another.

Complicating things is the fact of language, causing a barrier
of communication.

A universal way of communicating is through music and it is
not perfect, speaking only to our feelings through it's
rhythms, tones and tempos.

A beautiful symphony brings us all together, yet still there
is no realization to speak aloud through it's personal language.

There are no easy solutions you offer in this poem. That is your integrity as a poet shining through the disappointment of being unable to identify an example of UNIVERSAL COMMUNICATION. Music being non-verbal at least overcomes some problems. But if you have ever heard the pentatonic scale in Chinese music in contrast to our western diatonic.chromatic scale, you confront the problem with music as localized in its nature. On the bright side, I've read that every December all over JAPAN audiences take in performances of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with its ODE TO JOY. They have made this most western of musical forms their own! Bravo, Ludwig van!
