Unreturned Poem by David Knox

Unreturned

What is love when it's not returned?
What is my affection when it's spurned?
Can a love flourish
When it's not 'us'
When it's just 'me'
Will this love cease to be?
Can a love grow strong
And last long...
When it's one-sided
And it's not mutual, will it not be short sighted
And soon wither and die
But i tell you the truth.... I hold this... I hold my...
My love close, like a beloved child
I nurture this love though I'm given no food
Not from you... Is this good?
And is it right?
Must I sit and continue to love and adore
When I'm given no love in return
And deserted.... left longing for more
I love you darling... now it's your turn.
How shall my love grow?
When there is no fear of rejection-
But certainty of it... How then shall I not go?
And lapse into depression?
When the prospect of failure is all there is
What shall I do?
But nay! I am stubborn, I will continue to love you
I refuse to give up so I guess it's one-sided
But I have hope, even if a fool's hope
That one day I will not lament that my love remains unreturned
But I'll hold you and you'll tell me you love me... FIRST
