Vanquished Hope: A Cry For Nigeria Poem by Dr Anthony Onoja

Vanquished Hope: A Cry For Nigeria

Democracy, once bright and fair,
Now lies dead, its light a mere flare.
INEC's halls echo with the sound of deceit,
the people's voice silenced, their will in vain.
The maker of kings now claims the throne
His dirty tactics left us all alone

At nightfall, his victory was cheered
But in our hearts, the truth was feared
For Nigeria has become a den of thieves
Drug lords and corruption, our land now grieves

Oh Lord, we plead for your guiding light
To lead us through the darkest night
Where tribe and religion once defined
Let unity and love now entwine

We dare to hope, we dare to sing
'Arise o compatriots', let freedom ring
Though fear and doubt may cloud our sight
We hold on to hope with all our might

The monster we feared has come to life
But we refuse to give up the fight
For yesterday's vanity is today's pain
And the cost of freedom is worth the strain.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I feel the weight of despair and disappointment in this poem, as I laments the state of democracy in Nigeria. It's disheartening to see the will of the people overturned, and power-hungry individuals vying for positions they are not fit to hold. The imagery of Nigeria being a den of thieves, and drug lords making laws is unsettling. Despite the darkness, there is still a glimmer of hope, and the author clings to it, daring to sing the national anthem and not giving up on the reins of hope. Overall, this poem is a cry for justice and a better future for Nigeria.
