War Trilogy Poem by Fergal Dunne

War Trilogy

War I. Glory And Goodbye

Medal, honour, glory shown.
Each victory the flag is flown.
A lovers heart whispers why?
Then beats a final beat goodbye.

War II. The Return.

No one sees the wounded
No one hears the widows, mothers, fathers, children cry.
No one listens to the heartache stories.
They hide the simple flag draped box.
Inconsolable and devastated within.

War III. I Am No Longer Safe.

Save our country from evil they said.
I went to save,
I went to make it safe,
I went so families could sleep safely.
Here I am,
Here I do my duty,
Here I do dirty deeds.
Is this me?
No poster said I would steal,
No drill sergeant said I would murder,
No politician said I would torture.
I return from making safe
To find
Myself no longer safe.
