Narra la leggenda che le ricchezze dei ricchi sono una buona cosa per tutti,
E una tale favola ha avuto così tante rappresentazioni che è facile
Essere indotti a pensare che questa sia la verità.
Ma quando vedo gli occhi dei poveri starsene in disparte nella loro nuda miseria,
E metto a confronto quegli sguardi con l'avidità personale e l'impudicizia morale
Della maggior parte dei ricchi, sento montare il disgusto dentro l'anima
E ho coscienza di condividere la più stretta fratellanza con i più poveri dei poveri.
Potrò mai descrivere tutto questo? Forse, ma voi dovrete ascoltarmi,
Non scacciarmi come cenere portata via dal vento.
Così, come un novello cantore, me ne andrò come barca che lasci gli ormeggi,
Attraversando un ponte dopo l’altro, asciugando qualche bruciante lacrima ed
Evocando il volto che ebbi quando venni al mondo.
Le udite? Come messaggeri che giungano da troppo lontano,
Le parole vanno e vengono, narrando di un mondo ingiusto ed insensato,
Rivelando inquietanti realtà private e mettendo i miei timori a nudo.
Novello cantore, canterò la vita, ma solo
Per accorgermi di non sapere che cosa significhi salvare davvero
Questo presente e un qualsiasi possibile futuro.
Perché il mondo non ha più miracoli da mostrare —Ed è questo
Il più doloroso tradimento.
