We Are Not The Caretakers Of The World Poem by Juan Olivarez

We Are Not The Caretakers Of The World

We are not the caretakers of the Earth,
Like we are not responsible for our own births.
We just cannot take everyone in,
There are so many reasons, where to begin.

We give billions away in foreign aid,
To the entire world, they have it made.
Yet the veterans and children are starving right here,
Our government for them won't shed a tear.

The ghettos, the barrios, Are you all asleep?
People sleep on cement in dirty heaps.
Our veterans are homeless, and that is our SHAME,
Our money is overseas, so who is to blame?

Lets take care of our own, we owe it to them,
The children the soldiers, to them life is grim.
Our mixed up priorities will one day do us in,
What we don't do at home is a terrible SIN.

Yet we give our money too terrorist states,
That can't even like us, they only can hate.
We give them money, and they SPIT in our face,
And they show no remorse, not even a trace.

So the hell with them all, all the rest of the world,
America is our pride, our shining pearl.
If a wall must be built, then let it be so,
Somehow someway, we must stop the flow.

We are all immigrants, that there folks is a fact,
But we are not here to plunder and sack.
We are not the caretakers of our world,
About that fact, theres just no quarrel.
