We Are What We Are Poem by David Harris

We Are What We Are

No matter what image
we are tailored on.
Our being lies beneath
a layer of sinew and bone.
We are what we are
for what our soul might possess.

We gather our bounty
from another’s eyes that gaze
on the fruits of our labours
and the barren baskets we fill
and the songs that we sing
of the joyous and sorrow.

We are what we are
for all to commend or condemn.
We walk tall in the mire
and stoop when branches swing low.
We are what we are
for all to see.
