Whale Evolution

Rating: 5.0

The big bulge
in the head of the sperm whale
being between the nostril and mouth,
you are forgiven for thinking
it's a highly evolved upper lip
to cushion a powerful push.

That bulge is revealed now
to be not lip
but padded brow.

'Surely still lip too, '
you maintain,
'and the nostril
pushed to the rear of the brain.'
