What Could Have Been - Poem by wendy martinez

Waltzing through the entry doors, I see your beautiful face. Like an unsuspecting land, I am startled by the sudden flood of recollections. My palms start to sweat and my heartbeat has been thrown off by your presence. Instantaneously thinking back to the time of us, my eye sheds a tear. Though the tears have begin to flow from my eyes, and are gently caressing the side of my face; I raise my soul and face the sorrow that has dared to stand in my way. I gather all the courage from the heartbreaks I have endured, and gaze deeply into your loving eyes. They look at me with the same curiosity that one looks at the world. As a smile spreads gently over my lips, your gaze flickers away; leaving me without so much as a grin to say you had noticed my presence. I miss you, my darling. Even though new people have begun to take up the pieces of my heart, you have always been in the back, in hiding. A piece of my heart that has begun to take on a new shape; nothing, yet you remain, always so close to being blown out of my soul forever. I hope you know that you decided to end our story, but for me; I had always thought it could have been the beginning.
