What If Poem by Lone Dog

What If

What if there is no God?
The world might be a better place.
Christians, Muslims, even Jews
Would extend their arms in warm embrace
Without a reason to fight and hate.

What if there is no God?
Black-cloaked women could doff their shrouds
And take their just and equal place
Beside men. And unfettered, proclaim aloud,
'Free at last, free at last,
Without religion, I'm free at last! '

What if there is no God?
Religious folk would be totally miffed
At all the hours spent in church and prayer
Worshipping a God that doesn't exist: -
Embarrassed and ashamed at being misled.

What if there is no God?
Suicide bombers would have no call,
No virgins in heaven, no martyrdom,
No reason sane to end it all
By blowing themselves to smithereens.

What if there is no God?
How could so many be so fooled for so long?
What would it say about the human race?
Just why is our need for a God so strong?
Is it the hope of eternal life?
