Who Can Follow The Road Into The Distance? Poem by Mark Heathcote

Who Can Follow The Road Into The Distance?

Who can follow the road into the distance?
And watch waver into the day and the night.
Into the darkness and the ancient light
Who can follow the road where it slips to the sea?

And -follow me in hunger and subsistence home.
Who can run into the light and dark at sunset?
Who can run into the dark and light of dawn?
And march for home footsore alone.

And look for a truth—a sign bursting from a seam of gold.
A shadow yet not dissolved holding its clothes
Its beauty, beating like a bird's wing, still resolved
To never fail to migrate it back home, even naked alone.

Never -had a healing moment that didn't come
Without a nail gun and a shark's grin
Never -had a smooth run of luck
That didn't kick like a mule each day.

Never -had enough time to play without rain.
Never -had enough time to while away the hours.
To end the silence in my mind wanting to take flight,
Never had the temperance of a true pretender.
To say something and mean it
Oh, to say something and without any doubt believe it.
