Will Mankind Outlast The Selfie? Poem by Raj Dronamraju

Will Mankind Outlast The Selfie?

Does your selfie show your shame?
Does your selfie show your dissatisfaction?
Does your selfie lower the seriousness in which I am supposed to take you?
The selfie will make me famous until the next status update

For a few seconds, your latest selfie is more important than world news
Camera held up with one hand
Head tilted like we are all K Mart portrait photographers

For each day you post a selfie, God kills a young child
Takes their life in exchange for your vanity
Your miserable audience of one riots tenderly in the privacy of your own home

But out on the line hangs immediate closeness immediately revealed as immediate distance
A watershed moment for public spectacle over private experience
I was here and this is the proof

For we can't make do with private spectacle
Sit up and take notice of more than yourself
The great dying out will be documented in online photo albums
How we lost interest in living in the real world and spent all our time in make believe
