Wisdom Is Not Given Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Wisdom Is Not Given

Only passing set tests.
With a hope correct answers,
Were approved as best.
Gets one further in schools.
To know how to apply,
What is needed next.
Or hoping to be promoted,
With a raise in pay to expect.
Few take for granted,
Ambitions like these...
Require specific business steps.

However,
Being correct can upset...
Anyone unaccustomed to accepting,
Their own mistakes to make.
A few will go out of their way,
To fault another for flaws obvious and seen.
With heard loud and demeaning comments.
Done to protect themselves,
From accepting being corrected.
Not to learn.
Or listen to comprehend.
Yet perceive to believe,
They've arrived in their lives...
To become automatically wise.
Although,
Many who have experienced...
Obstacles to face and chase away.
In the most public of places.
Or beg on knees,
To be forgiven for stupid mistakes made.
Ultimately admit to find in their minds,
Where their problems exist.
Stupidity and common sense,
Are not too often the best of friends.
And wisdom is not given.
Sometimes to get it,
One has to crawl through abusive relationships.
Or being left alone,
To condone one's own stubbornness.
Since wisdom to have it is earned.
Wisdom to have it is not easy to get.
And the ones quick to display ignorance,
Are proud to display,
What they have learned to earn.
With it known they will stay that way.
As if proud.
