Wishful Thinking Poem by Darwin Henry Beuning

Wishful Thinking

Rating: 5.0

I would have liked to have been
A guest on The Johnny Carson Show
With host Johnny Carson
and his guests, Tiny Tim, Cher, and the Dalai Lama

It is a dream
Which will never be
Tiny Tim passed away
November, nineteen ninety-six

I remember watching him
Marry Miss Vickie, live,
On the Tonight Show in sixty-nine
What a glorious night

Johnny Carson passed away
January, two thousand five
He hosted The Tonight Show for thirty years
Until his retirement in ninety-two

I've driven through his hometown
Norfolk, Nebraska
Many a time
Corn fields and rolling hills

Cher, our American Queen, has reigned supreme
Fifty years on the Billboard Charts
I would like to meet her
Hat in hand, and give a bow

The Dalai Lama
Tenzin Gyatso
Now in his eightieth year
Spreading his message of peace and love for all the world to hear

Wishful Thinking

Sir its okay to have some dreams as dreams for such dreams make us feel yet many things we haven't achieved and strive to make it true despite odds. Dalai Lama is still alive sir at least a part of your dream can come true even now.

I also liked the very few Johnny Carson shows that I saw. Cher is a singer whom I have always liked and I have some of her DVDs and compact discs.

The picture of the four is a great addition to the poem, Hank! (I just finished re-reading all 42 of your poems to see what other pictures I had missed. You told me about the one on TOO SOON but I don't think you mentioned this one.) Very nice.

P.S. Somewhere at home I have a VHS with one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Steve Martin was a guest of Johhny Carson on the Tonight Show and did a routine he called 'The Great Flydini'. Problem is, I don't own a VHS player any more. Does anyone? Do they still exist? I wonder if there is a company that can convert it to DVD for me. Or is DVD now a thing of the past as well? I'm probably in for a few surprises when I return to the States.

Love the poem, Hank! Brings back memories of the good old days. I used to watch Johnny Carson as well. Can't get American TV live here in Brazil, at least not here where I am living, but can watch some of the old shows on Netflix. Haven't really watched a lot of anything. I did watch the movie 'Dreamer' last week with Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning. I loved it. I used to joke that Cher must get all of her clothes on sale, because they were always one-half off. Ah, and who can forget Tiny Tim with his high falsetto voice, singing 'Tiptoe Through the Tulips'? Such great memories...
