Wood pecker, wood pecker
Sound you make's musical
Drumming hollow wood or
Pecking holes in dry trees.
Your colors're a delight
To watch and appreciate
You search in bark on trees
For insects hard to reach.
Your tongue's a marvel
Circling inside the head
To go extra lengths to catch
Hiding insects in narrow cracks.
Hole you make's round
Engineered to a perfection
Your abode of comfort
Is safe to raise a family.
Home you abandon becomes
A place for others to live
And pests you eliminate helps
Keep an ecological balance.
