You Are So Beautiful Poem by Valerie Dohren

You Are So Beautiful

When love was young and eyes were blurred
I hung onto your every word -
Your voice, to me, was as a chime,
I heard you say, time after time:
'You are so beautiful'

And being young and set with charm
With love etched deep upon my palm,
The world was full with heights to climb -
You whispered softly, time on time:
'You are so beautiful'

But as my hair has turned to grey
Will I no longer hear you say
Those words, which ever were sublime,
To hear again in fullest time:
'You are so beautiful? '

Yes, I am old, bereft of grace
With many years upon my face,
And being all beyond my prime
I long to hear just one more time:
''You are so beautiful'

(Yet words I set upon the page
Bear no reflection of my age -
But ‘fore those words run out of rhyme
I need to hear just one more time:
'They are so beautiful')

And when I lie in death's enfold
With eyes yet dim and aspect cold
Upon my breast a lily fine
Will you then whisper one last time:
"you are so beautiful"?
