You Smiled Poem by Randy McClave

You Smiled

You smiled and you joked
When they took their food stamps away,
You laughed and you grinned and you poked
When they cut their pay.
And then when they shipped them all off,
All you did was snicker and scoff.

You gave a big thumbs up and a salute
When they took away from the needy and the poor,
You cheered and laughed when they got the boot
Because, the Government needs to save more.
Then while you weren't looking,
You never noticed or cared what they were cooking.

You gave a giggle and also a smirk
And at our allies and friends you then cursed,
When they were defending their countries work
So, you ranted and screamed, "My Country First".
But, you never did wanted to know or hear,
To understand what caused that retaliation and fear.

You now go out spending and shopping
And all the prices are now on the rise,
The benefits you worked and paid for are now dropping
To only your own disbelief and surprise.
You thought they were only coming after others,
But, in reality coming after you was their druthers.
