Young Woman In Corolla Poem by Bill Galvin

Young Woman In Corolla

Passing over the western landscape
There are not many travelers this weekend day,
While cruising 75 on Interstate 80,
Eastward across the salt flats of Utah.

An auto slowly approaches from my left
Probably doing only one or two mph faster,
In no hurry to pass.

We stay abreast for a bit, and I glance over,
Just to see who the traveler may be.
Most locals pass by quickly,
As locals everywhere know the roads
And sense where and when the troopers are out.

The driver is a young woman, late 20s, alone;
The plate says Minnesota.
Calm, confident; on a long solo trip;
In a Corolla, just like you were;
Same age, same car, same road,
Back in ‘78 on your solo journey.

There will always be remembrances of you,
Everywhere, I guess.
