A Day In The Life Of - Poem by Simon Gowen

Now it's some what of a mystery
Just how we spend our day
So I guess I'll have to tell you
In an entertaining way.

Our first task is to wake you
We snuggle up and fuss
And when you're up and ready
You feed and water us.

When it's time for you to shower
We're told to go outside
But when you need to leave for work
That's when we go and hide

So you're standing on the front porch
You're temper's wearing thin
We've had our fun already
So we make our own way in

You lock the doors and windows
You stroke us once or twice
You tell us you'll be back real soon
You tell us to play nice!

As we watch you leave the driveway
Our day can now begin
I think I'll have a cat nap
So its back to sleep again

Before long we are woken
By the mailman at the door
We play with bills and letters
As they skate across the floor

I don't think I should mention
That we squat in kitty litter
So scratch this verse completly
Unless you want a titter!

Now i'm playing in the kitchen
and then i hear the phone
i hear your answer message
i know that you're not home!

Its the woman from the office
The one you love to hate
She's sorry but she's slept in
She's calling cos she's late

I'd answer if I knew how
And tell her what you think
But instead I play with bubbles
That are floating in the sink

Now I'm tired and exhausted
I've got soap suds on my head
I think I'll go and have an hour
Or two upon your bed

Before long I can hear a sound
The rattling of your key
You're home from work already
Well it must be time for tea

You play the answer message
A few choice words you mutter
You turn to find me leaving prints
Upon your bread and butter

How should I know better
We're programmed to have fun
So you tell me that I'm naughty
And you spread another one

You reach into the cupboard
And take and take from it a tin
I recognise that label
Its salmon once again

You place my bowl beside you
We both sit down and eat
Then into the lounge I wander,
And I curl up on a seat

Before I've had the chance to
Sneak in fourty winks
The door outside is opened
So it's off to play me thinks

I thought I saw some movement
Right there in the grass
So i lay flat on my tummy
Whilst wiggling my ass

I sneak real close towards it
And then I take a leap
Its the neighbours scruffy tabby cat
We both begin to shriek

There's claws out at the ready
My ears folded flat
I'll tell you now you've never seen
A fiercer looking cat

You call my name quite loudly
So I turn around and run
He's lucky that you intervened
He knows I would have won!

That's enough for me today I think
I'm feeling rather dizzy
So when you leave me home again
You'll know that I've been busy!

So if you own a cat don't worry
That they're sleeping like a log
If you wanted noise and mess all day
