A Silent Witness Poem by Ravi Panamanna

A Silent Witness

Rating: 5.0

In this grave yard
Where ceases not fire,
Where ceases not lamentations,
I am for eons a silent witness.

Lone I stand on this rolling slopes,
Green fields lie beyond the silent road.
A distant whistle is heard
And I know the last train is also gone.

To so many parting moments
I am an emotional witness.
To every curling smoke
I bid a silent adieu.

Under my cool shades
Meet the forefathers of this hamlet.
And they whisper through my foliage
Unto the perching birds and passing wind.

No cry shakes my roots,
No howling wind wakes the dead.
Beyond the din of the world
All are equal under my sprawling shades.

Melancholic nostalgia … touchy … brings hush sigh … excellently [poetically] put me in the blind lane of reminiscence … Ms. Nivedita UK PS 10

Reflective, and poignant quilling, Ravi...Here in the U.S.A., this work would serve as a most apropos offering for tomorrow, in the U.S.A.Tomorrow, Monday, is Memorial Day in the United States, a day of a myriad emotions ranging from parades & cheering, to gravesite tears, prayer & homage in honour of those who laid their lives down for our Freedom, in every War since America won it's Independence over 230 years ago. I like the subtle morosity that sets the tone of this work from its get-go....However, the impact effect of the final stanza places an exclamation point on the entire piece.Stellar Work, Ravi. F j R

If only trees can talk as in their shade we sit - comforted by it's strength and beauty. Walking along with this silent witness I visualize the past, the present and lamentations in graveyards and trains leaving stations will continue into our future too...'all are equal' if only man can accept this fact. Thank you for this tribute to trees and the message therein
