A Tiny Angel A Tiny Devil Stand On Our Shoulders Poem by Terence George Craddock

A Tiny Angel A Tiny Devil Stand On Our Shoulders

neither a tiny angel
nor a tiny devil
stand opposite
each other on your
right and left
shoulders
shall we imagine
them to be good

and bad then
or a more traditional
good and evil?
good and bad
can be like a seesaw,
if life is a pivot

point then as one goes up
the other will go down;
good and bad can be like
a Punch and Judy show
Punch struggling to control
master life episodes
Punch must take a stick
to defeat tricky problems;

good and bad are not equal
we write both into our own characters
choosing which part to play
as emotions desires sweep over us
we are not fooled except
by desires which rule

our hearts desires
are thought seeds
we water nurture into fruits
which masters us
neither a tiny angel
nor a tiny devil
stand opposite
each other on your right

and left shoulders
shall we imagine
them to be good
and bad then
or a more traditional
good and evil?

interesting take on an old popular expression that gave pictorial image to the dilemma we humans face between choosing between right and wrong, good over evil.
