Alone - Poem by Andi Jakobs
I’ve seen daddy get drunk then drive me to the bar with him.
I’ve heard words and phrases that should never be repeated.
I’ve witnessed mommy storm out of the house
And threaten to never come back.
I’ve seen my brother turn to drugs for an escape from life.
I’m witness to the police coming to our house more than once.
I’ve been told that I might have to live in a foster home.
I have stayed at friend’s houses days at a time
Because of the fear of returning home.
I’ve considered running away more times than I could ever count.
I have been through the nights that seem to last forever.
I’ve cried myself to sleep above screams and shouts.
I’ve seen families shatter apart like broken glass.
I’ve been told that I might have to testify against daddy.
I’ve heard that I might get separated from my family.
I’ve noticed that my brother doesn’t come around much anymore.
I’ve turned to unhealthy ways to cope with my dilemmas.
I’ve realized that family does not mean blood.
I’ve realized that I’m alone in this world.
