Altruism Poem by Doris Cornago

Altruism

Rating: 5.0

Before
Not knowing
You, how could
I know the depths
Of this selflessness
By knowing you more
In my own selfishness
Which gives more self
Meanings multiplied
Meaning magnified
Mine minimized
Magnanimous
Mysterious
Meaning
Mine

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Altruism is the willingness to do things that bring advantages to others, even if it results in disadvantage for yourself. While humans are believed to be fundamentally self-interested, recent research suggests that their first impulse is to cooperate rather than compete and even toddlers spontaneously help people in need out of genuine concern. When people behave altruistically, their brains activate in regions that signal pleasure and reward, similar to when they eat chocolate (or have sex) . For me, I find much pleasure in finding my needs met through meeting another person's needs when he cannot help himself. There's more to self than we can understand as without another, we cannot have completion.

True, Dr. Tony, it's the mark of being human, and we can attribute this characteristic to one God who made all, no matter the color or belief. :)

Why so, my dear Kostas? This poem is for all of us who gave altruistically for a purpose greater than our own selfish ones. Only the selfless purpose goes unfiltered through all eternity, while the selfish motivations are held against the light or burned to ashes. You would know that. :)

Hi Bro. Bernard. I lost my mom recently and in the loss, I found many treasures. I am truly inspired by all that was left but unable to see previously, due to her sickness and her suffering. Thank you for your inspiring appreciation. :)
