Tumharay bazoo ka aala
mera dil-kush karnay waala
sonay ka kamra hai
lakin kuch dinoN se
buray sapnay dekhtay
main jaag baithti hoon.
GhaD-haDtay bijli k toofaan
bhi ab tum jagaa nahin paatay
ye meri maaN muje phone par kehti hai
main us ko kehna chahti hoon
k aajkal main ek safed aadmi
k saath apna sameh guzar rehi hoon
lakin meri samaj main ne nahin aata
ye sun kar vo kya sochne lagay gi:
Theek hai, tum dosti kar sakti ho
lakin vo kabhi na chahti thee
k main ek pashmi wideshi aurat bun jaaoN -
dar lagta hai us ko k kahin
main kisi videsh ki na ho jaooN,
aur kabhi baat na vo kar sakay
apnay bvishya k paDpotoN se.
Hazaaron meel door kKorea main vo baithi hai
aur poocHti hai muj se k kya koi gaDbaD to nahin hai
Muje us par hansi aati hai
aur main tum ko kehna chahti hoon
k meri maaN kitni haasya-spad hai?
Lakin kal raat ek Korea ka aadmi
tere kamray main aa ghusa
aur balaatkaar us ne mera kar diya
aur tum araam se, mere paas sotay rahay
us k haath main ek chaakoo tha
khoob chamak raha tha
main jab uthi to dekha k
tum fir bhi apni platinum
chamDi main so rahay thay
Apni maaN ko dilaasa dene k liyay
main kaisay bataooN k kuch bhi gaDbad nahin hai!

American Dream
BY EMILY JUNGMIN YOON
The alcove of your arm
has become my favorite room
for sleep, but I've been roused
by nightmares lately. Even thunderstorms
couldn't wake you, my mother says
over the phone. I want to tell her
I've been seeing a white man, an American
man, but I can already imagine her:
Well, you can have friends. She had never meant
for me to become a Westerner —
she's afraid of losing me to a foreigner, being unable to speak
to her future grandchildren. Thousands of miles away
in Korea she asks if anything is wrong. I want to laugh.
Say to you, Isn't she ridiculous? But
last night a Korean man broke into your room
and raped me, with you calm in your repose
next to me. He sat on my stomach with a knife,
the only gleaming thing. And you were still
in your platinum skin when I opened my eyes. How
can anything be wrong, I comfort my mother
