how often in the midst of joy
the snake sorrow comes to strike
scattering our hopes
wounding us at the height
of the starriness in life
we never grow accustomed
we always grieve
and yet
father in Heaven
let us not forget
there is a defiant kind of joy
blind to all events
a Spring more relentless than any winter
we find in Your Presence
an inner Eden.
