An Old Dream Recalled

I looked beyond the little grille

that covered all the starlight still

and in my dream I turned the key

to set myself at liberty

for God is brightest out of doors

beyond old fortresses and more

I sang unto the grasses tall

and little flowers one and all

oh God in Heaven from me please take

the shadows all these prisons make

that I may breathe the starlit air

and find no reasons for despair.
