And After I Take My Midnight Pee - Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

The more I become satisfied...
I am no longer dissatisfied,
With a life I had taken for granted.
I feel an aloneness without complaints.
I feel a clarity disconnected,
From those who bitch!

It is as if my gratefulness,
I should hide and protect!
What if I am suspected...
Of a happiness accepted?
And a smile I flaunt,
Becomes a threat the desperate want?

Tossing and turning as I attempt to sleep...
Haunted by taunts,
My good feeling is about to be taken away by thieves!
So I get up to inspect my peacefulness.
Hoping to hold onto it for as long as I can!
And after I take my midnight pee...
I light a cigarette and have a cup of coffee.
Sitting I wonder...
Why do I,
Feel so damn good about my life? '
