As I Look Around This World - Poem by Stephen Mountain

As I look around this world
I see people going to work,
to help pay for their cars,
their houses,
their luxeries.

As I look around this world
I see people stealing,
I see people beating,
I see people hating one another.

As I look around this world
I see children swearing,
I see children bullying,
I see children hating one another.

As I look around this world
I see people who are homeless,
I see people who are injured,
I see people who are starving,
I see people who are just holding onto life.

As I look around this world
I see children who need us,
I see animals which need our care,
I see land which needs our protection.

As I look around this world
I wonder to myself,
How come we only care about ourselves?
How come our children are growing up without an education?
How come animals are becoming extinct?
How come our land is becoming an eyesore?

As I look around this world
I ask to myself,
Is it hard to share love?
Is it hard to care for each other?
Is it hard to spend time with our children?
Is it hard to protect our animals?
Is it hard to love our world?

As I look around this world
I ask myself,
How can we be so selfish?
