JAAN NISAR AKHTAR:
ash.ār mire yuuñ to zamāne ke liye haiñ
kuchh sher faqat un ko sunāne ke liye haiñ

ab ye bhī nahīñ Thiik ki har dard miTā deñ
kuchh dard kaleje se lagāne ke liye haiñ

socho to baḌī chiiz hai tahzīb badan kī
varna ye faqat aag bujhāne ke liye haiñ

āñkhoñ meñ jo bhar loge to kāñToñ se chubheñge
ye ḳhvāb to palkoñ pe sajāne ke liye haiñ

dekhūñ tire hāthoñ ko to lagtā hai tire haath
mandir meñ faqat diip jalāne ke liye haiñ

ye ilm kā saudā ye risāle ye kitābeñ
ik shaḳhs kī yādoñ ko bhulāne ke liye haiñ

Though my couplets are for the whole world
Still some of them are only for her to remember

It's not wise that I forget all my pains
Since some of them are in my heart ingrained

They will prick your eyes if you go on dreaming your dreams
Since they are just meant to embellish the lashes of your eyes

When I look at her hands, it so seems
That they are just meant to lite lamps in temples

All learning trades, all magazines, all books
Serve just to forget the memories of a certain person.
