Ballad

Poem by Sonia Sanchez

(after the spanish)

forgive me if i laugh
you are so sure of love
you are so young
and i too old to learn of love.

the rain exploding
in the air is love
the grass excreting her
green wax is love
and stones remembering
past steps is love,
but you. you are too young
for love
and i too old.

once. what does it matter
when or who, i knew
of love.
i fixed my body
under his and went
to sleep in love
all trace of me
was wiped away

forgive me if i smile
young heiress of a naked dream
you are so young
and i too old to learn of love.

Lovely poem. There is nothing as diversified as love. Being old teaches us new ways of love.... Seeing love in its universality from human to beast to Nature.(Report)Reply

So beautifully crafted on love between young and old.

    'forgive me if i smile
young heiress of a naked dream
    you are so young
and i too old to learn of love.'... is so nice. Enjoyed thoroughly. Thanks for sharing.(Report)Reply

The voice of the poem declares being too old to learn of love. But that person knows of love for that person gives examples of it. Unless he talks of carnal love and those examples given depart from that. And why he is refusing love in that way? Young or old, love has no age.(Report)Reply

This is love, but you're too young to understand,
and I am too old to learn. Brilliantly penned.(Report)Reply
