Bhagavad Gita Poem by Rm. Shanmugam Chettiar

Bhagavad Gita

Bhagavad Gita is a seven hundred
Verse Hindu scripture written as a part
Of the great Epic Mahabharata
By sage Veda Vyasa by 500 BCE.
It is written in Sanskrit language.

you are not the body but the spiritual Self.
The body is made up of five elements _
The senses, subtle senses, mind, ego
And the intelligence. It is the seat
Of desires, attachments, feelings, and emotions.

The body is Prakrit, the one with nine gates.
The knower is Purusha who keeps it alive.
All actions take place in the Prakriti from Gunas (modes)
While the Purusha is the witness, non-doer.
Ignorance and delusions bind it to the world.

Mind is the seat of desires, feelings
And thoughts, and is led by the sense objects.
Attractions and aversions are the products.
Ego controls mind and enslaves the self.
Mind is an impediment to liberation.

Do your duty with detachment; renounce
The doer-ship; know the actions that bind you
And the actions that free you; know the difference
between action, inaction, inaction
In action and action in inaction.

It teaches the mas to uphold Dharma
And undertake duties upon the earth.
Action is superior to inaction
And of actions selfless actions are the best
Because they do not produce karma.

Renunciation is renunciation
Of doer-ship and not giving up the world.
Renunciation is renunciation
Of the desire for the fruit of action.
Then you are free of karma and bondage.

A sanyasi has no attachment
To the sense object and to his action
By conquering his body and mind.
A clod of earth and a piece of gold
Or foes and friends are one and the same.

God is in you and in everything.
God and self are the same reality.
The whole universe is permeated by Him.
God is manifested and unmanifested.
Creator, preserver and protector is He.

Surrender to God with utmost devotion.
All yogas culminate in devotion.
Devotion is the selfless love expressed.
Contemplate on supreme consciousness.
Take refuge in Him to get liberated.

The gunas, three, (modes) influence the movements,
Directions and orientation of all
Living and non-living things in the world.
They influence the behaviour of things.
The gunas are three - Sattva, Rajas and Tamas.

Sattva is for happiness and knowledge.
Raja is for passion and Tamas is
Of ignorance and indolence
Gunas bind the soul to the illusion
And the chain of births and deaths of beings.

Bhagavat Gita is the teaching
Of Lord Krishna to prince Arjuna
About the duty and one's commitment
In the battlefield when he dropped his bow
As were his opponents his kith and kin.

Bhagavad Gita is the essence
Of the Hindu philosophy, which tells
To practise and achieve Dharma, Artha(wealth)
Kama and Moksha (liberation) in one's life cycle.
To escape the cycle of birth is vision.
