Pralini Naidoo

Rookie (2 July 1966 / Durban)

Birth - Poem by Pralini Naidoo

Can anything feel as painful and scary as birth?

This wrenching out from cosy snug dwellings

Into the gust of lifeforce - unrelenting uncomfortable

Can I dive back into my womb of yesterday

With its familiar boundaries and coddling nest

But no I’m too far out to go back now

Now beckons

And that slap on the bum

Tells me there’s adventure to be had
Pounding heartbeat

Primal rhythm of life

Here I come
