Bitter Sweet Cake. Poem by Geoffrey Fafard

Bitter Sweet Cake.

Ingredients: Firstly Bitter.

1 Bad attitude- 500 ml
2 Reconstituted anger -2 handfuls
3 Old age brains -1 set
4 Nightmares-A cupful of the worst
5 Memories of her- 2 pinches (coarsely sifted)
6 Aches and pains- to suit
7 Tortured willow- a small sprig(or piece of
stinging nettle if no willow available)
8 Salt from tears now passed (to taste)
9 Flour self praising-1 kg stolen from a lost
cornfield at midnight.
10 Two eggs from an angry Emu

Ingredients: Secondly Sweet.

1 A single tin of black molasses
that has been sung to
2 A handful of desiccated smiles
3 Half a litre of summer rain
4 Sweet dreams-at least one, two
would be better
5 Memories of her (finely sifted)
6 One tin of clotted cream condensed
from the milk of human kindness
7 Honey squeezed fresh from the bee
(disregard stings)
8 A branch full of blood red mulberries
and their leaves.Rinse off worms(keep)
9 250 grams of pure love- no processed stuff
(optional..very rare and difficult to find)
10 Two eggs from a happy Raven

Method.
Grease up a metal bucket.Beat all eggs into rainwater.Add flour,
Mix with a small spade.Spit on hands first for grip.Fold in memories,
molasses, attitude and anger.aches and pains.Leave brains till last
you may need them to thicken. Smile as the smiles go tinkling in and don't forget
the dreams.Keep stirring whilst adding the honey and a tad more memories.
Now its salt-a pinch- to sharpen and finally the pure love.
Watch the mix squirm and bubble when this goes in.
Place on coals as hot as hell for about a short lifespan
Test with a wooden stake. The cake will be ready if the stake
comes out clean or dissolves. Either or! Turn cake out onto
serving sheet of iron or old wood, be aesthetic choose the best.
Lastly lay the mulberry leaves out on top of cake in a heart shape and place
red mulberries on top in all their red glory.
Pierce them now
so that the juice like blood runs down the cake and lays red on the table
Finally decorate the centre of the heart with the tortured willow
Serve at once whilst warm and moist……

PS. Worms kept are obviously silkworms and could be engaged to
make you a handkerchief to later dry your weary juice stained eyes.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Fragrant and slightly sad this cake but I wager you have tried a slice before..Although 1 slice leaves one wanting more….

Very entertaining, but fanciful. For a true story about cake, read my poem THE GRAVY CAKE. Well done.
