Breathing Room Poem by Andy Brookes

Breathing Room

Give me space you say.
I would give you all the space in the universe
if it would take the contempt from your eye.
feeling the longing for freedom in those pent up muscles
that pensive shruggingsigh.

deep in the ocean oxygen tanks on empty
I struggle with the meaning, scrabbling to the surface
to breathe but I choke on fetid air

there are too many spaces between us, I think,
space in the bed, the cold spot we do not touch.
between our words which clash in misunderstanding
between the lines I write and their meaning.

the pain in your eyes or the knife of your words
we need space and soon we will have all the space we want
each travelling the empty rooms of our hearts.

Space yes space and then there is the void.
