Cape York. Some Time In The Wilderness - Poem by Geoffrey Fafard

Roads Closed.(the Big Wet)

Well there you go
The road to nowhere is closed
Must be wet I said.. Yep he answered
Might be boggy he said.. Yep I replied
Might get lost he said..
Been lost all my life I answered
We started laughing
Well I asked?
Bugger it he said
May as well be lost as anywhere! ! !
Lets go….

IF IT WAS EASY (Complicated tracks wind through the cape)

If it was easy you wouldn't go there
If it was busy you wouldn't stay there
If it was boring you wouldn't play there
Too tame? you're lost and not there.

The Clam and the Crayfish (A Remote Sand Cay on the Reef)

Said the clam to the crayfish
Would you like a little drink?
Well said the crayfish
I will have a little think
If we stop at one no harm can be done
If we stop at two thats plenty for us two
If we stop at three what will happen to you and me?
If we stop at four we won't need any more…..

The Song Of the Brolga. (They gather in numbers on the edge of vast salt pans)

Hey you Brolga way up the front
On what is your thought
Hey you Brolga way down the back
I have found all but nought
Hey you Brolga smack dab in the middle
What have you caught
A bad case of earache
Is all I can report….

The Creb Track. (A Steep and wondrous track winding through verdant rainforest)

Deep green day moonlit night
Soft shadow and aromatic delight
Lost through ridges high then low
Run through creeks that gleam and flow
Forest so thick one cannot penetrate
Damp and wet for worm and snake
Always beautifully lean and wild
Born in an ancient past a tangled child
Rivers to roar cliffs to soar
Delights to crunch for a crafty old boar
Hills to climb and thrills to find
In this hidden place long lost in time.

Poet's Notes about The Poem

Remote calls me.. The Cape where 1 person in 300 sq kms is a crowd and the solitude breeds its children on land and sea that beckon you..Come see.
