Chameleons Camouflaged Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Chameleons Camouflaged

Already capable with abilities,
To adapt and fit...
Into various environments.
Neither to be noticed.
Nor be suspected as the reason,
Abrupt changes are the cause...
Those environments once calm,
More are willing to break rules.
With a disobeying established laws.

Chameleons,
Thought to be flawed.
When at first seen to appear.
Quick they do,
To camouflage...
Their differences to accept.
With it done to make clear.
Wherever it is,
They have been sent fought to fight.
No one is left to identify or know,
If they had been friend, foe.
Or 'something' that can not be described.
With it done to leave,
Once peaceful environments...
Destroyed and ruined.
By those who live in them.

"Why...
Are friends, family members.
Neighbors and business associates.
Fighting amongst themselves?
And over what? "

-No one seems to know.
I have asked a few.
And they told me,
This is what...
They have been taught to do.-

"Taught to do?
Taught to do...
By who? "

-Hmmm.
Maybe...
By 'What',
Would be a better question to ask! -

"I agree.
But...
It anyone knew,
What that 'what' was...
There would be no reason,
For them to fuss or fight at all.
Unless..."

-Unless?
Unless...
What? -

"Unless it had been introduced,
As some kind of sick ritual.
You know...
A change to accept.
Yet...
Not to question its origin.
Or why the pointlessness of it,
Has become prioritized."

-What you're saying,
Makes no sense.-

"And...
What they continue,
To do to themselves...
Without it to benefit anyone,
Does? "
