Clock And These Times - By Olly

A clock ticks
In an open classroom
And looks upon the faces
Surrounding it
Seconds go by
Then minutes
But just what is it
Being recorded on our clocks?
Is it a check for reality?
A remnant of our sanity?
The people and places passed?
A display to monitor
And to keep order?
Or a true reminder
Of the loneliness we face
Of what little we have left
Of the distant pasts
Of further futures
Of what can possibly be accomplished
In our remaining lives?
Not much may occur
But change is imminent
Some will be remembered
But most forgotten
And whatever the concept of time
We will perceive
It passes on
Lives are short
And materials are not
They are impressionable
When held dearly
Utterly close to someone's heart
Hold memories that are lost
In weakened flesh
The clock keeps ticking
And will reminisce
Of smiling faces passed
Textbooks will not remember
But items will keep its mark
