Closest I'Ve Known Poem by Mitzi Kesterson

Closest I'Ve Known

So I'm buying pink.
Afraid that I am gonna be alone.
Eventually,
W/my black dress,
'Cause nothing's assured.
And happy endings float away
W/the days we only whisper.
Why does it have to be this way?
When all we want is forever-together.
Can't they forgive us for this &
Kiss out foreheads -
Send us on our way.
(To the ocean,
which was old before you never saw it,
But w/me, the first time, in the dark of night,
barefooted, salty, sticky
Watching the hurricane come in.)
What is this about Venice I heard?
I've always dreamed of there, but didn't tell you.
So how DARE you give me yourself so late in the game.
Past another & when you know that
You won't live forever.
What do you do? Who do you curse and blame
When once you've found
The breath that saves you from drowning
You find that you were alone in the discovery?
When one is alone in being spared is one truly saved?
When no one can be you,
And I will take no one.
Your heart can't hate me so
That it faints
Like it's trying
Since I hold you.

Even so, I hold you.
