Count It Joy When You Can Walk Poem by Susan Williams

Count It Joy When You Can Walk

.
Count it joy every day we can rise up and walk--
not everybody can do that
and someday we won't be able to anymore--
so rise up and walk, my friend, and count it joy.
.
Today I walked to the mailbox down by the road
and I felt the rich earth under my feet
and felt the pure blue sky over my head
so rise up and walk, my friend.
.
And on the way to the mailbox
I stopped and talked to the horses grazing in the pasture
and they sauntered over to the fence and talked to me
so rise up and walk, my friend.
.
And on the way to the mailbox
a squirrel dashed across the dirt road
and stopped and chittered at me for disturbing his pursuit of nuts
so rise up and walk, my friend.
.
And on the way to the mailbox
my sparrows flew overhead
dipping and swooping and stitching up the clouds
so rise up and walk, my friend.
.
And on the way to the mailbox
I breathed in all that fresh air
with its scent of flowers and crisp scent of pine
so rise up and walk, my friend.
.
And on the way to the mailbox today
I walked and talked with God today
and I thanked Him for my legs today
so rise up and walk, my friend, while you may.
.
