Creation Poem by Sheena Datta

Creation

A flower grows from a seed to an awesome blossom
wild free and fragrant
just as a thought germinates and
becomes a bouquet for all to cherish
the mind houses seeds
to let the wind embrace them
whisk them away to become ideas
to explore salute celebrate
and kiss the petals of life

This is a model poem showing how eloquent, meaningful and poetic an extended image can be. You effortlessly drew out so many possibilities from your initial image and they flowed outward with persuasive power. NOTHING IS OVERDONE IN THIS POEM. It all grows naturally, patiently, truthfully out of a core image. If I were still teaching Creative Writing, which I did for over 15 years to high school students, I would use your poem to show them sheer wonder of an image, to prove to them This is how you write a poem. You don't tell us things, you let your images show us. And they would understand.
