Dance Bar Girls V/S Beggars Of Tomorrow Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

Dance Bar Girls V/S Beggars Of Tomorrow

Rating: 5.0

Ours is a nation that is not wicked
Ours is a nation nurtured by respect for every woman
Ours is a home where children are born of grand ceremonial weddings
which are celebrated with music, pomp and gaiety
as the rich or poor father's purse and pride permits;
ours is a nation where no divorces are encouraged
ours is that country where woman is the child -bearer of our generations
ours is that country where woman is the supreme institution of modesty
ours is that country where temples revere women deities as goddesses
yet in that helm of entertainment how can our women
be made to dance in the dance bars to earn their livelihood
when our national leaders have been women and are women today
when our teachers and principals in schools and colleges are women today
when our scientists and street sweepers are women today
when our judges and advocates are women today
how can we allow our sisters and daughters to be idols of entertainment
when with age and time will vanish vigour and beauty
what is the assurance then
that the dance bar girls of today
will not be beggars tomorrow?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Better for women to work in dance bars than beg on streets: SC to Maharashtra govt

The Supreme Court on Monday came down on Maharashtra government for not granting license to dance bars and warned not to turn blind eye to the apex court order. The court also criticized the state government for framing rules that prohibit opening of dance bars within a distance of 1 km from educational institutions.

'Dance is a profession. If it is obscene, then it loses its legal sanctity. Govt regulatory measures can't be prohibitory, ' the Supreme Court told Maharashtra government.

'It is better for women to perform in dance bars and earn than begging on streets or indulging in unacceptable activities, ' the top court added.

The Supreme Court had recently cleared the decks for the issuance of dance bar licenses to hotels and restaurants in Mumbai as it modified the conditions for the permit and excluded installation of CCTV cameras from restaurants and dance performance area.
