Devi Ahilya Bai Poem by Kishore Kumar Das

Devi Ahilya Bai

Through out the ages
many great men, women
born in my country, India
among the few noble saints
to be remembered everyday morning
Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar
stands out
the greatest Queen
India has ever produced
brave and noble
pious and philanthropic
humble and godly
On taking control of Indore
She declared:
'The kingdom belongs to Lord Shiva
I shall do duty for welfare of people'
no words to narrate her greatness
She ruled Indore for thirty long years
blessed are the people
during her golden rule
curbed lawlessness with a firm hand
enemies afraid of her
trade flourished to the pinnacle
numerous temples she had built
spread the message of love and peace
a poet once praised her in verses
which she threw into the river
she was dead against flattery:
her administration praiseworthy
I bow down my head before her
her life, a great inspiration
for generations to come.
