Dog's Tale Poem by Kewayne Wadley

Dog's Tale

Do you truly want to know what I do all day
Besides random things in the yard
And conquering the squeeze of my ball,
I sit and wait for the first moment
I get to see you. To listen to you speak.
It's not that my attention is limited, there are plenty of things
I could do to pass the time, okay maybe not
But it's just that I get this sensation as soon as I see you.
To know how your day is going, the things you see.
This philosophic light that shines whenever you speak,
I can listen to you talk forever and a day with attentive ears.
I attempt to please you in every way that I can,
Don't get me wrong, I make mistakes.
It's not as overbearing as it sounds, I respect your privacy
Just as much as I respect you.
I suppose it's the urgency I try to express, showering you with my tongue, as time passes in the blink of an eye.
It doesn't take much to put a smile on my face as your company is all I could ever ask.
To love and protect you as much as I can,
Each moment grows thin as my time here is much shorter than yours
If blessed with the longevity of your presence.
I don't have much to offer but I can give you the biggest smile I can possibly muster
with the wag of my tail,
For the time and patience it takes to care for me as much as you do.
I appreciate the love you give as you could just throw my food in a bowl and walk back in the house or not change my water bowl at all,
It is this very reason I pace back and forth waiting for you.
longing for the vividness of your smile.
Only then do I see things in bright splashes of color,
Not just because I want you to kick the cat out of the house
